Olympus Digital Voice Recorder (DVoR)

If you do not have a digital voice recorder (DVoR) it is a must for any professional investigator. The DVoR can be used to take investigative notes while in the field and to take recorded statements. Either of these can then be easily transferred to your desktop or laptop computer. For larger statements, the DVoR can be hooked up via USB directly to your laptop and the statement can be recorded directly to your hard drive. For evidentiary purposes of audio that is not transferred directly to your hard drive it is best to immediately transfer the audio following an investigative statement . Then without opening the file, burn it to a CD-ROM, clearly label that and archive it. The CD-ROM now becomes your original. It would also be advisable to note this in your case notes in the event the evidence is needed in court. Once you have secured the audio evidence and labeled it, you can either email a copy of it to your client or mail them a copy of the original.

For using this device to organize your investigative notes you can attach the audio file to that portion of your investigative notes. If you prefer text, you can transfer your dictation to your notes and file that in the same manner.
