It seems we are getting closer to developing a profile on a person than we thought through certain cell phone apps. The possibilities during a surveillance are limitless. The new battery prototype is primarily composed of a zinc anode and a manganese cathode that can be screen printed and covered with a non-printed template cover. Each mercury-free battery weighs less than one gram, and can individually produce about 1.5 volts of electricity. By placing several batteries side by side, however, up to 6 volts can be generated. The institute has already produced these little power houses in the lab, and hopes to see them into production by the end of the year. The batteries have a relatively short lifespan. If the lifespan can be increased the potential uses for surveillance technology are tremendous. The first is Twine. This one aims to collect relevant information that you will be interested in. It allows you to bookmark it and save it for future reference. When you search in the future it will adjust and move the information that it feels matters most to you at the front of the list.

Next is Searchme. This allows you to search media, information and news all in one. The engine returns a preview of the website allowing you to view it and determine if it is of interest.

Cuil Claims to be more powerful than its rival Google. It presents information to you with a preview and tabs to refine your search at the top.

Lastly, to be released on May 18, 2009 is WolframAlpha. This seems most interesting and unique in the sense it provides you with the answers to a questions by using symbolic language with algorithm power interfaced with understanding the complexity derived from simple rules.

These search engines provide investigators with even more tools and resources than Google.

Identity Theft

Identity Theft has become one of the crimes that receives so much attention in the digital age. This development appears to have been in the making over the past several years with applications such as Picasa and Flicker. This basically means that the user's information could be accessed from any network with an internet connection. This information would remain on Google servers as opposed to your standard desktop hard drive. Of course this would mean the user would trust Google with all of their data and information surrounding documents, photos and web history. The intelligence community could find this to be an invaluable tool in the war on terrorism. Law enforcement would also have a tool at their fingertips that could help solve crimes. With that information at their fingertips it could allow for a better profile to be developed of a suspected terrorist. It could also provide critical evidence in an investigation. This shows what is going on inside the brain while people are thinking.

This has been referred to as "thought identification." The usefulness in law enforcement, investigations and security are invaluable.

Thought identification gives fMRI's the ability to look at the brain in action with computer science's new power to sort through massive amounts of data. The goal: to see if they could identify exactly what happens in the brain when people think specific thoughts.

Experiments have been conducted where they asked subjects to think about 10 objects--5 of them tools like screwdriver and hammer, and 5 of them dwellings, like igloo and castle. They then recorded and analyzed the activity in the subjects' brains for each.

The computer found the place in the brain where that person was thinking 'hammer'.

Hammer isn't one place in the brain. It's many places in the brain. When you think of a hammer, you think about how you hold it, how you swing it, what it looks like, what you use it for.

Each of those functions are in different places.

When we think "hammer" or "screwdriver" for example, Neurons start firing at varying levels of intensity in different areas throughout the brain. Researchers have found out they could identify which object they were thinking about from their brain activation patterns.

They are able to identify the actual thought that is occurring.

The use in the future could lead to the most advance security screening measures to date. We would be able to determine the thoughts of someone before they act on them.

In Car Dash Night Vision

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 267px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_i7lsCRrm0Zc/SW9E6v7Ch7I/AAAAAAAAAX4/b-8KIdgd8FU/s400/nv1.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5291523863270819762" />

Nighvision was born in the military. Flir Systems will make this thermal imaging available to the general public. The usefulness for night time surveillance is very practical with this new technology.

Listen to the podcast

Cyber Security Goldmine

It is estimated that by 2013 the national cyber security budget will reach $11 Billion US. Instead of trying to hoard information about their users, the Internet giants have all announced plans to share at least some of that data so people do not have to enter the same identifying information again and again on different sites.

Supporters of this idea say such programs will help with the emergence of a new “social Web,” because chatter among friends will infiltrate even sites that have been entirely unsociable thus far. Making this a more social environment allows an investigator the ability to see what a subject of an investigation may be doing at a certain time. You’ll be able to flip through their pages, magnify sections of interest and access commentary from the Library’s top experts-all on the same touch screen,” the Library of Congress’ website informs the public. This makes the tools for investigative research much more easily accessible. The next best thing would be for it to go online.

The exhibit which opens in the Library’s Great Hall will have six touch screen kiosks among marble columns and sculptures.

The Library’s staff said that both young students and scholars would enjoy the very bold innovation and would probably be impressed by the dramatic free-standing wall that reacts to a visitor’s physical presence. The device uses hidden cameras that focus on visitors’ feet and it is the first of this kind in a museum.

Later this year, the Library plans to give its visitors the opportunity to “bookmark” objects of interest, creating a personal profile they can check out on the library’s website. The library hopes to achieve this feature by equipping visitors with a kind of passport, each with a unique bar code.

Microsoft Surface: Codename Milan

Microsoft Surface Computer (codename: Milan) is the next biggest thing in relation to the iPod touch. Take the ease of using an iPod and places it on a 22 inch high by 30 inch horizontal display with a large touch screen running Windows Vista. This enables you to create, view, organize and present an investigative file, outline or results to your clients or in your office. This has somewhat of a Minority Report feel to it and would help when a round table discussion is in order. Even when using encryption researchers have found a way to defeat the system. They stated that the new attack which they used to get around the data encryption involved RAM, and how information is often stored on it. When a computer is shut off, or even when RAM is removed from the computer, certain information or memory may still exist on it. Their research indicated that the data on a RAM chip stays on there for several seconds or up to a full minute after a computer is shut down.

If a method is used to cool the RAM down, the memory will stay on there for much longer. When the chips were chilled using an inexpensive can of air, the data was frozen in place, permitting the researchers to easily read the keys — long strings of ones and zeros — out of the chip’s memory. Much like taking a frozen snapshot.

Those same researchers were able to get through the encryption on many occasions, gathering information simply by turning off and shutting down a computer. The scary factor comes into play when they achieved the same results when doing this over a network. The attack is most effective when a computer is put into standby or hibernation mode.

Garmin Nuvifone

Condense your gadgets into one single hand held device, the Garmin Nuvifone. This single piece of technology will provide you with all of the smart phone capabilities with the added bonus of a built in handheld GPS. It also carries pre-loaded maps of North America or Europe, a media player, millions of points of interest and voice promted turn-by-turn directions. But with this one there is much more. Ever forget where you parked your car in the parking lot? When you take the nuvifone out of its mount it will take note of where its at and help you find it later. A built in camera comes standard and of course it will geo-tag your photos, and Garmin Online brings real-time traffic, stock info, sports action and news right to the device. In that a complete system was outlined utilizing the most up to date equipment.

In the second part of this three part installment we are going to discuss using this equipment at night or on extreme low light conditions. The mounted PTZ camera and with IR cannot film in low light conditions with the IR through the rear tinted windows of your vehicle. Doing so will cause you to film the interior of your vehicle. Taking this into consideration it is recommended that you film your subject or activity with your windows slightly down in order to have a clear visual of your subject. Utilizing a blacked out sun shade will give you the needed privacy from the front of your vehicle while allowing you to monitor the activity on the LCD located in the front seat.

Part 3 will be next and feature using the mobile surveillance system in a static setting while remotely obtaining the video.

IronKey

Information Security is as important to the professional investigator as it is important to the large law firms, insurance companies and corporations who make up our clients. IronKey provides the most critical elements of computer security with Strong Encryption, Internet Authentication, Private Surfing, Device and Web Security all in a rugged design. There are numerous variables that exist before we even begin the job. One of the most advantageous systems we can deploy to conduct an effective surveillance is a mobile surveillance system. This consists of three parts. The first part up for discussion is going to be the static surveillance system inside of the mobile surveillance unit. You will want to start with a large SUV such as a Tahoe or Suburban. Two reasons for this; one, height is important in parking lots; two, you will need plenty of room in the rear. Make sure you have adequate tint on the rear windows of the vehicle and lower your second seats to give you a flat surface. This should be carpeted as most GMC's are when the seats are in this position. Your first piece of surveillance equipment consists of a DVR or a Mini DV Camcorder (both must have a LCD screen for viewing your line of sight) used for recording purposes only and will remain up front in your vehicle. This unit will be hardwired to a PTZ (Pan/Tilt/Zoom) IR (InfraRed) camera to allow for video up to 240' in nighttime conditions.

Your next step is going to be to install this PTZ IR Cam on a sturdy full size Slik Tripod with a low center of gravity. You need to ensure that the tripod will remain stable with the PTZ Cam fully attached. You will also want to make sure that this is able to remain upright during standard driving. You will then wire it up to the front of your vehicle where you will have a PTZ controller installed.Your next step will be to connect the PTZ Camera to your DVR/Mini DV Camcorder. You are now ready to operate your surveillance system in the rear of your vehicle while you remain up front seated in the driver position. This is good for three reasons. One, you are able to film while driving. Two, you are able to obtain footage from positions that only the rear of your vehicle may have visual access to. Finally, you will not be seen holding a video camera up to your head as you are looking through the view finder. This makes you less suspicious looking. As you control the camera with the PTZ and view the LCD on your DVR you appear to be looking for something all while remaining at a reasonable height where passersby are not as likely to see into the vehicle.

LinkedIn

One of the most important things we will find ourselves doing as investigators is networking. There are many of these online groups available. You will find some to be more social than professional. One of the groups that has demonstrated its integrity and is highly regarded by a vast array of professional industries is LinkedIn. This allows you to network with the individuals you may only meet through others within your network. It also allows those individuals to see your profile and may even pay off for someone looking to retain the services of a professional investigator. The service is free and easy to set up. Even before you are signed up you can search to see if any of your friends or colleagues may already be on the group. This is a wonderful tool as an investigator to gain exposure and get referrals from other professional individuals.

Phishing with Botnets

Phishing is the act of tricking someone into giving you confidential information via the computer such as SSN’s, DOB, Credit Card Numbers, etc. for malicious purposes. Generally received via email. Botnets are a collection of software or computers that run autonomously. When these two are combined, a criminal enterprise may very well exist. Millions of dollars are generated by these illicit businesses resulting in nearly 15 million Americans being victims of identity theft. Enter Fast Flux , a rapid way to randomly use computers to do this with changing IP addresses. One tool we as investigators can use to begin an investigation into these types of crimes is DNSStuff Tools. This begins the mapping process to better understand the origins of phishing emails. Working this and comparing the IP addresses and TTLs help to better give you an understanding of the life of each IP and if you are dealing with a round robin scenario. If targets expire, try pinging again and see if the address is constantly shifting you may have what is known as a fast flux. Use the Whois tool to understand the owner of the IP. If you a getting what appears to be a legitimate organization then you may not need to be concerned. If you are getting a bunch of ISP's associated with consumers then you may have a bot-infected host. It is recommended that the ISP be contacted to alert them of your discovery.

As professionals, technology not only plays an important role in our investigations, we many times find ourselves checking into those who abuse it for criminal purposes. This continuously evolving field of cyber-security and cyber-investigations is the future of where our industry is going.

Rid Spyware With Ad-Aware

As investigators we need to keep our systems running smooth and efficiently. The most useful piece of these extensions found under add-ons is the search engines feature. This allows you to access multiple search engines directly from your Firefox browser. Add-ons in general are small pieces of software that can add new features or tiny tweaks to your Firefox browser. Having this at your fingertips keeps the many resources available for research directly in front of you when working at your computer. Many times these simple searches leads to additional information being uncovered or discovered about your investigation. Not all search engines perform the same and no single one is totally comprehensive. For those investigators who are more technically inclined, you can create your own add-on to serve your needs more specifically and thoroughly.

For those that do not know where to start customizing your browser; try sifting through the recommended add-ons for your Firefox browser.

In terms of organization Firefox allows for you to be more structured in the appearance of your browser with tabs and bookmarks you use on a regular basis. When you hit a dead end, having these in front of you may be exactly what you need to start thinking outside of the box to be successful in your investigation.

Let's face it, an investigation is basically researching and uncovering facts. There is no better place to start than to have Firefox on your side.

Google Maps

Google Maps provides several elements to assist in any investigation. Aside from the obvious benefit of locating any given address it gives you the ability to visually canvass the area with its satellite imaging with downloading another similar program Google Earth. Google also provides Street View in many major cities throughout the US. This added feature gives you the ability to canvass a setting from the perspective of a vehicle before heading out on surveillance. This assists with determining routes of departure to assist with check pointing and gives you a visual of the location that will be placed under surveillance. In areas where this is not provided, Google Earth will provide a layout of the general terrain from a bird's eye view. Nearby businesses can also be canvassed with the click of a few buttons. Take this mobile with Google Maps Mobile and you have the same access right at your fingertips.

Computers Part 2 - The Notebook

Operating at your office is one story, working out in the field is another. Another important piece of equipment the professional investigator should have is a notebook computer. You will find this can be used for recorded statements in conjunction with a DVoR and to prepare your surveillance reports while in the field. These are two of many ways this equipment can be used to allow you to operate more effectively and efficiently.

For your notebook you should have a Duo Processor to allow you to multi-task. You will also want to look for at least and 80GB hard drive. Again, an external hard drive will provide you with the necessary back-up and additional storage. It will also allow you to sync up with your desktop should you choose to have both. You will also want a built in LAN Wireless card for access to WI-FI when you travel. Another key feature is a wireless broadband card from your cell provider to give you the access you will need to the internet while in the field. Also make sure your notebook as a DVD/CD burner to transfer video immediately from the field to a DVD/CD and forward to your client. If you really want to impress then transfer your video from the field to your notebook via video editing software and then email or stream it to your client. If this sounds like it may be of interest then make sure you have a decent video card to handle the transfer and render the video.

Just a bit to whet your appetite. There will be more to follow on the mobile end of things shortly.

Computers Part 1 - The Desktop

It need not even be said that in today's age the professional investigator must have an up to date computer with current software. To start we are going to focus on the Desktop Computer. This generally will be your "mainframe" located at your office. This will allow you to store all of your files, backups and contact information for your clients. This would generally be accompanied by an external hard drive for back-up purposes.

Recommendations would be no less than an Intel Quad Core Processor with no less than 3GB of RAM and 2.4 GHz. This will allow you to multi-task at high speeds. No less than a 500 GB 7200 RPM Hard Drive which will provide you with ample storage for your text, audio and video files. A 512 MB Video Card to provide you with the necessary video transfer and editing. A 48 x CD/DVD Burner which will give you the means to transfer your files to CD/DVD at your client's request. Last but not least would be a wide screen digital flat panel monitor with at least 22 inches in size. This will give you the ability to clearly see your files and organize them with multiple folders open. It also proves to be more gentle on the eyes after spending numerous hours in front of the monitor conducting research, preparing reports or transferring video/audio. Not to mention more easily visible from across the room or while you are kicking back thinking about your investigation.

As also mentioned, an external Hard Drive consisting of no less than 500GB. You can also find a one terabyte version. Either can be used to back up your system in the event of a crash. It also plays a bit to your advantage to use this as a storage bank for your audio and video files from statements and surveillance. The most important role this piece of hardware plays is the ability to immediately pick up and go with all of your files in the event of a natural disaster or fire. I would also recommend strong encryption on this since its contents are of great value to your business and your clients.

Last but not least would be a quality laser printer all-in-one document center. A black and white printer is fine, however, color will give you that added benefit and also that added cost. This device provides the ability to scan, fax, copy and print all in one. Having a document scanner tray would be more advantageous than just a scanner than can handle one sheet at a time. This allows you to drop the stack of documents to be scanned into the tray and they will all be converted to your desktop and can then be easily organized for future reference.

In Part 2 we will cover laptops.

On Dash GPS

As professional investigators we find ourselves out in the field at least once every day if not all day everyday. One of the best tools you can have in your vehicle is a GPS system to get you from A to B. There is no longer a need for juggling maps when heading out. Simply enter the address and you will get to your location with step by step directions. One of the added features some GPS units provide is the estimated time arrival so now you can plan more accurately exactly when you will arrive at your destination. This is very important in cases involving surveillance and service of process. In addition, if there are any last minute changes forwarded by your client you can enter those new destinations and follow the on dash map. Most units adapt for daytime or nighttime driving to give you a clear picture of the streets and maps with turn by turn directions. For more information visit Garmin, one of the several manufacturers of such devices.

FBI Planning World's Largest Biometric Database

The Next Generation Identification System is the nickname of the FBI's database that will hold a vast quantity of biometric information. Using the proper camera with the MDVR16 you will also be able to power it with the enclosed battery source found in the DVR itself. All of these unique features combined with some ingenuity provide you with the necessary tools to obtain the covert video your client will need to make or break their case. The unit also features a remote control on/off switch and attractive storage case along with belt case for wearing on the waist. The internal 30 Gb storage is plenty. The DVoR can be used to take investigative notes while in the field and to take recorded statements. Either of these can then be easily transferred to your desktop or laptop computer. For larger statements, the DVoR can be hooked up via USB directly to your laptop and the statement can be recorded directly to your hard drive. For evidentiary purposes of audio that is not transferred directly to your hard drive it is best to immediately transfer the audio following an investigative statement . Then without opening the file, burn it to a CD-ROM, clearly label that and archive it. The CD-ROM now becomes your original. It would also be advisable to note this in your case notes in the event the evidence is needed in court. Once you have secured the audio evidence and labeled it, you can either email a copy of it to your client or mail them a copy of the original.

For using this device to organize your investigative notes you can attach the audio file to that portion of your investigative notes. If you prefer text, you can transfer your dictation to your notes and file that in the same manner.

PI Network Forum

The very first thing we need as investigators is a network. Time is one of the most critical aspects of our daily lives. In the Tech-Investigator you will find reviews and research of the many items we as professional investigators use on a daily basis. For those that are new to the profession, you will find useful input and suggestions to better advance your abilities, market your business and grow. All the while you will find the use of technology to compliment your investigative skills and research.

Solutions will also be presented and discussed in order to provide some insight as how to work through those challenges we face daily as investigators.

Throughout my 13 plus years of investigative work I have found myself in many different scenarios that required the use of either my intellect, a piece of technology or through research. As things have progressed, my understanding of this continuously evolving field has required me to learn and adapt on my own. Through this I hope to share with you my experiences and develop you into a better investigator while continuing to educate myself.
